skiing in the dolomites

Adventure-seekers look no further. This playground of a mountain range is the ultimate ski destination for any family looking to incorporate outdoor activity into their Italian getaway. With its expansive terrain, broad trails and fantastic grooming, the Dolomites are the ideal vacation spot for skiers at all levels.

As a family, this is our absolute favorite ski destination. Below are a just a few reasons why…

dolomites have all levels of skiing

  1. The Varied Ski Terrain

Unlike other ski destinations, the Dolomites have no central base. Instead, there are 12 ski areas, all accessible with one ski pass. Although the Italian Alps are home to the trails of Olympians past, the terrain also offers wide, groomed runs perfect for beginner and intermediate levels.

For the more adventurous and avid skiers, the Sella Ronda ski circuit offers 25 miles of trails through the four Dolomite Passes around the limestone massif Gruppo Sella. A full day’s adventure, you’ll experience all of the natural beauty of the Ladin valleys and enjoy some spectacular meals. We strongly recommend hiring a local ski guide. Edo, a Cortina local is a favorite of ours. It’s easy to get turned around while skiing ‘clockwise’ for an entire day.

  1. A Vast Range of Dining Options

Who wouldn’t start your day by skiing straight to a steaming cup of cappuccino in a beautiful porcelain cup? At lunchtime, forget your mountain lodge cafeteria with steam table burgers and lukewarm French fries. The resorts across the Dolomites boast restaurants, cafes and ski-in huts with their own cuisines. From wood-fired entrees and grilled meats to fondues and stews, the unique menus are guaranteed to satisfy your winter-fueled craving for all forms of comfort food. And the food is really, really good! For more about the cuisine, we invite you to read more here

  1. A Varied Array of Relaxing Activities

The Dolomites are home to some of the most incredible spas in the world, providing that perfect après ski feeling with panoramic mountain views. There’s nothing quite as luxurious as floating for an hour in one of their natural or brine saltwater pools, well-earned after a day spent on the mountains.

With more than 300 days of sunshine each year, outdoor seating is a consistent option for those who may not be in the active mode. The resorts offer a senior pass for those members of an extended family who may be more inclined to head to the top of the mountain and take in the views than try and keep up with the kids who will want to explore the black diamond trails. Not a fan of downhill skiing? Dolomites also offer a wide array of winter activities including snow walking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing.

Our Recommendation: Lagazuoi

If we had to recommend one excursion throughout this mountain range, it would have to be Lagazuoi. Sitting at just over 9,300 feet, the gondola takes you straight up the mountain for one run down that may take you all day. We would suggest stopping halfway at Scotoni, one of the mountain’s restaurants (where the waiters are dressed in traditional Ladin attire) and the wood-fired meals are truly delicious. The setting is unparalleled, with no development to interrupt the natural beauty of the landscape. To get back to the trail, you’ll just need to find the horse-drawn carriage “rope tow” and get pulled on your skis back to the lift.
